After the glorious finish to Prep Season and an overall exciting week and month, this week felt like a letdown.
My theme for this month is to lock in and step on the gas. While I wait for excitement and life to change, I can put in the work to speed it up.
I have cut out certain activities because they are a distraction, and I feel this month needs to be one where I focus on my own goals so I am ready to meet the moment when an opportunity comes along.
I have plenty that I could be doing. Instead of seeing this month as a letdown, I am looking at it as I have more work to do, and I need to finish it instead of getting distracted by what isn’t happening.
I’ve been singing that old Isley Brothers song, “Work to Do”. (See the video at the end)
Building something that lasts
It’s time to lock in on a high-stakes situation and put my heart into building something that lasts.
This week I listened to Steph Curry explain why he isn’t taking more money to go to another team. He is leaving 20 million dollars on the table, but his explanation for staying made me pause
“This is home,” Curry said on Sept. 28 at the team’s pre-season media day. “This is what we’ve built. This is a community that I’ve played in front of my entire career. Being able to finish the story the right way is a big part of what I can control.” (Source: The Straits Times)
Steph built his home with the Warriors organization, Coach Steve Kerr, and the other players. They put their hearts and souls into playing for the Bay Area (and fans around the globe).
He wants to finish his legendary story the right way as a Golden State Warrior, and it’s not about the money.
I’ve started having the conversation with myself about what home is now that my mother is no longer alive.
San Francisco was home by default, and not because I was emotionally invested or cared to lock in and build anything here. It is only because my family is here.
I always hoped I would escape and go someplace else because the best years of my life were when I wasn’t in San Francisco, or when I was traveling a lot more. I don’t think it was necessarily being out of San Francisco. I think the difference was the people I met and what I was doing. It was tough at first, but then I locked in and started building real friendships (people I still talk to today) and a real life.
I can do that here in San Francisco too.
I do think my life will not be limited to San Francisco because my real friends live all over the place, but I do think I will meet new people who will become real friends.
Right now, my life is coming back to alignment, and just like before, when life is properly aligned, the right people come at the right time and sit in the right seats on the bus.
In the days ahead, I am looking forward to beginning to build my home here in San Francisco. I know that my current life situation is temporary. I have no desire to expend any more energy than necessary to keep it going because it’s not where I am meant to stay and build.
I’m preparing to lock in, put my heart into a high-stakes cause, and live in my new home in my hometown, San Francisco, and probably worldwide.
