I am among the first wave of millennials who were told they could do anything and be anything.
That is true in many ways because I have done a lot of things that I have always wanted to do but never thought I could do and I don’t have as many limitations on my life as previous generations did.
However, there were several things that the do anything and be anything crowd forgot to tell us.
- There were a cost and price to pay for whatever choices we made
- The process was going to take much longer than advertised.
- The Only Thing that is Certain is that there will be uncertainty.
That last point:
The only thing that is certain is that there will be uncertainty is the understatement of 2020!
Even the weather is uncertain…here in the Bay Area, we had spectacular thunderstorms last weekend.
I think of my Grandmother’s generation who had to deal with the Depression, World War 2, and institutional discrimination.
I think “How did they manage all of that?”
True enough, their generation didn’t grow up with television and advertising that promised them certainty if they just bought these products or did x,y,z but nevertheless despite enormous challenges, they adapted and carried on with their lives.
I believe that is what this generation of people is being called to do.
We are being called to adapt to these changes and carry on with their lives. Forget the myth of certainty because it doesn’t exist.
Among my peers, I have witnessed people who did everything correctly according to the lists we were give.
They did well in High School and went to Great Colleges and/or got advanced degrees.
They landed six figure jobs, got married, and had children.
They did everything you were supposed to do but that wasn’t enough to save dysfunctional marriages or prevent job loss when there was a pandemic and economic downturn.
As we head into the Fall Season of 2020, let us make peace with the truth that nothing is guaranteed and nothing is certain except more uncertainty.
If we get our minds wrapped around that truth and accept it for what it is, we will be better able to cope when the uncertainty inevitably occurs.
For the moment let’s be intentional about taking care of our health!
- Turn off the News
- Put down the alcohol
- Eat Fresh Whole Foods
- Take the 20 minute Activity challenge and engage in 20 minutes of Activity per day.
Let us not give up
Let us not give in
Let us finish 2020 with faith and hope.
