This summer I went to the San Jose Fit Expo because I had never gone before and I thought that as a fitness/health coach I should go to this even,t BUT what convinced me to drive 50 miles and pay the $25 entrance fee was because they announced that my fave SF 49er Vernon Davis would be there for a meet and greet so I decided this was definitely worth my time.
I walked in, look around, and immediately sighed. Too many people with no clothes on and one of my biggest pet peeves: People wearing Sunglasses indoors. *smh*
So I walked around and there I saw 4x Mr Olympia Jay Cutler. I am not a big fan of the man thong thing but since Jay has hung up his thong he looks COMPLETELY different. I had become something of a fan since seeing him in his sweater on social media so I did what any good fan would do: I got my Creepy McCreeperson on with my camera to take stalkery pictures like this one to your right. What was even worse was people on Facebook asking me to take even more pictures of him because that one was too blurry.
I walked around and saw current Mr Olympia Phil Heath and he had a very long line. While he looks better with all of his clothes on, I was not moved enough to stand in his line. However I was moved enough to stand in Jay’s line. So when it was my turn to take a picture with him I was just like Foxy here:
Just Kidding. My poorly behaved days are over. Kinda. Maybe not but don’t worry, I didn’t do that.
Something Different
Overall I would say that walking around the Fitness Expo I realized WHY 83% of people are not active and want nothing to do with gyms or fitness. It’s ridiculous. It is all about big egos: People with no clothes on and sunglasses indoors. It was absolutely ridiculous. It was in that moment that I was glad that I had decided to build my business to address REAL PEOPLE with REAL WORLD PROBLEMS. I want to work with Busy Professional People, Folks who want to make the rest of their lives the BEST of their lives, and busy mamas and daddies who just want to be able to LIVE BETTER. I was glad that is who I decided to bring my message of health and wellness to because those are the people that are being ignored by an industry focused on the superficial and unsustainable
Informative Fitness Seminar: There is no perfect
I was so bored at this expo thing but Vernon Davis was not scheduled to appear until 3 p.m. so I decided to watch the women’s strength competition. That was great! It just goes to show that female athletes should not be pigeonholed into one body type. The lightest load these ladies carried was about 400 pounds.
When it was finally getting close to 3 p.m. I decided to get in line for the Vernon Davis appearance. I was HOT mad when i realized that he would be there on SUNDAY and not on SATURDAY. That was it! I was done! Time to leave and eat a burger and fries.
On my way out I see Jay and Phil giving a seminar so I decide to be nosy and see what they were talking about. I expected it to be a bunch of meathead nonsense: “Eat dat chicken breast. Lift dem weights brah” That same type of foolery that exists on social media. I also went because: I paid $25 for this event, there was no line, you could sit down, and white T shirt. (They never go out of style)
ANYWAY
The seminar was NOT what I expected at all. In fact I was very impressed with what they had to say. At one point Jay says to the audience, “I’m interested in hearing from some of the women. I’d like to get women’s opinions and perspectives.” I’m sitting here like:
That wasn’t the important takeaway. The important takeaway that they kept saying was that they did not have the perfect bodies even though they had won the biggest competition in their industry multiple times. Jay said that it was all an illusion under the lights and both talked about how you really need to enjoy life more and not become consumed with food and workouts.
I thought that was important to take note of. If you follow some of these people on social media, then they are always preaching HARDCORE and all of this stuff but listening to two of the best guys in the industry talk about how you need to pull it back to recover, grow, and live your life was pretty refreshing. I was also impressed with their degree of professionalism. Both had on clothes and neither were wearing sunglasses indoors. That was more than I could say than the wanna be’s walking around the expo.
Sadly I didn’t get to meet Vernon Davis and he has been traded to the Broncos so that’s sad but I did have a few important takeaways:
- My mission and message are for those who want to LIVE BETTER in REAL LIFE
- There is no perfect. It’s all an illusion.
- Just because one looks like a meathead doesn’t mean they are a meathead. They may even ask for women’s opinions so we shouldn’t stereotype
- The fitness industry really needs to do a better job of reaching REAL PEOPLE
- There is an appropriate Taylor Swift song for every occasion.
- I can’t take people who have no clothes on wear sunglasses indoors seriously and nobody should date these people.
