Nutrition Tips and Finds

The link between smartphones and Poor Eating Habits

According to findings presented by Korea University researchers at a 2021 virtual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, teens who spend more than 2 hours a day on their smartphones are less likely to eat fruits and vegetables, compared with those who spend less time on their phones.

Among 53,000 adolescents ages 12–18, those who used smartphones for 5 or more hours a day consumed more fast foods, sugar-sweetened beverages, chips, and instant noodles—a food pattern that can up the risk of overweight and obesity—than those whose smartphone use was limited to less than 2 hours a day. Food is meant to be experienced and enjoyed. That is tough to do when you’re distracted by the phone. Notice how much different your eating experience is when you put down the phone and are focused on the taste, texture, and enjoyment of the food.

 

Just Egg

Just Egg is a plant-based Egg Substitute made of mung beans. I’ve been curious about this product ever since I heard an ad for it on one of my favorite podcasts.

I scrambled these as you would a regular egg and it tasted okay. I started mixing one egg with the Just Egg just for consistency purposes.

I think this is a great alternative if you’re plant-based.

Try an exercise Snack today!
We’re still doing our 30×5 challenge and one good thing about the pandemic was challenging my thinking that I had to have a 30 or 45-minute workout or else it didn’t count.I have enjoyed waking up and doing 10 minutes of stretching or 15 minutes of strength training, or even a 20-minute walk.

Guess what? They all count and they all add up.

This has become a trend called “exercise snacking”. Ten minutes of activity is better than zero minutes of activity. Let’s break out of the mindset that we have to do 30-60 minutes of exercise for it to count!

150 minutes is 150 minutes!

What I’m Listening to
Bad Blood: The Final Chapter

Disgraced Theranos founder and CEO, Elizabeth Holmes is currently on trial here in the Bay Area for fraud. This podcast brings out even MORE evidence against the one-time Silicon Valley superstar. What’s incredible to me is that she was able to raise so much money all the while having a product that did not work at all. Even worse patients got false positives for diseases like cancer and one woman was even told her pregnancy wasn’t viable (She went on to deliver a healthy baby)

This is definitely worth the listen with current coverage of the trial!

What I’m Watching
Lula Rich on Amazon Prime

This is a great documentary on the rise and fall of the legging company LulaRoe. As someone who has been involved with a Multi-Level Marketing company in the past, I recognized a lot of the lingo and tactics used on women who just want to belong and feel successful.

This documentary shows the human need to belong and why we separate ourselves into tribes even around something like patterned leggings.

Double for our Trouble
When it comes to the Holidays, we’re making up for last year in my neck of the woods. People are really excited since we missed last year. The Holiday season is about being together and after the last year or so, people deserve to experience joy!
