I started my fitness career working in a commercial gym where selling supplements was part of my job. I had some issues with this because I believe that people need to work on the basics of eating well. I also think everyone is so different that people need to figure out what works for them and their biochemistry.
From the beginning of my career, I have believed that supplements were to supplement your healthy and nutritious eating plan. Taking a ton of supplements will not counteract eating a diet of sugar and junk foods.
Now that I am older, I do take certain supplements for various reasons, and my supplementation changes with my different health objectives.
Below is a list of my favorite Health Supplements. Some have become forever staples like Vitamin D3 and others I use during cold and flu season or even when I’m in a harder training phase.
As always consult your doctor before starting any Supplement
My Forever Supplements
Vitamin D3
I started taking this supplement in 2020 during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Studies were showing that people who had low Vitamin D3 were suffering more from Vitamin D3 deficiency.
Black people TAKE VITAMIN D3
Years ago I knew of a man who was extremely sick and his wife said it was due to low Vitamin D and his doctor said that this was common for Black people because our Vitamin D levels are low.
From The National Library of Medicine
In North America, most young, healthy blacks do not achieve optimal 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations at any time of year. This is primarily due to the fact that pigmentation reduces vitamin D production in the skin. (
It is becoming increasingly apparent that vitamin D protects against other chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and some cancers, all of which are as prevalent or more prevalent among blacks than whites. Harris 2006)
I don’t like to take pills so I take a Liquid Vitamin D3 supplement from Source Naturals.
Chia Seeds
I make a chia pudding every week because since I’ve started doing this, I haven’t had an issue with my digestion or being constipated.
You can add it to smoothies, yogurt, or make a weekly pudding as I do. This is a super easy Chia pudding recipe that I use.

Chlorophyll
Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color so of course one of the best ways to get more chlorophyll is to eat MORE GREEN Vegetables.
We can also take chlorophyll as a health supplement and I add it to my water.
I’ve had issues with low iron in the past and chlorophyll is similar to hemoglobin which carries oxygen around the body so I use this because research has shown that chlorophyll can help with anemia and other hemoglobin deficiencies.
Protein Supplements
Protein is not a magical macronutrient but it is important to maintain muscle mass and it also helps you to feel more satisfied so that you may consume less sugar.
Whole Food is always the top choice but sometimes that’s not a feasible option so a protein supplement is necessary.
I like to eat Protein Bars when I’m on vacation and I need a quick meal. Protein bars can also be a great alternative to a candy bar when sugar cravings hit. Please look at labels though because some protein bars have all the nutrition of a Snickers bar without the great taste.
Protein drinks can be a great alternative when you’re on the go or when it’s too hot to cook an actual meal.
Find what works for you!!!
Vega Sport Protein Powder
I prefer plant-based pea protein sources because it’s easier on my stomach than whey protein.
Orgain Ready to Drink Protein Shakes
You can find these at Costco which skyrockets these shakes in my book. They taste great and are easy on the stomach.
They’re perfect for a post-workout meal or an “On the Go” breakfast where all you can do is grab and Go.
Power Crunch Bars
These are my Favorite protein bars because they taste good and they’re not full of Sugar nor do they taste like cardboard with fake sugar.
They have some really interesting flavors such as: Red Velvet, Lemon Meringue, Salted Caramel, and French Vanilla. I’ve tried other bars but I always come back to these.
Their nutritional profile is also a plus because they contain more fat than most protein bars and that can help keep you more satiated and blood sugar levels stable.
They are a great Post Workout Snack or even a treat when sugar cravings hit.
Immune System Supplements
Don’t get it twisted! I still use Dayquil, Nightquil, and all the other cold medicines but natural supplementation also works for me!
