This Fall PUSH is about going Deep so when I thought about what really triggers me to go off track and start allowing myself to get distracted, I had to look within.
Not seeing Results
What triggers me to go off track is when I KNOW I am doing the right thing, I am putting in time, effort, and I know without a shadow of a doubt that this is what I should be doing and yet I am not seeing the results I hoped for.
It is at that point where I start looking around and start to procrastinate, distract myself with social media, or even decide this may not be worth it and think about giving up.
I saw this all the time when I worked in gyms. People would get gung ho about a diet, work out 5-6 days a week, and then when the results started to slow down or it wasn’t going fast enough they would begin to slack off, go back to their old habits, and then give up altogether.
My Strategy for overcoming impatience and wanting to give up
Life isn’t like a TV show. We do not solve most of our problems and get results in 30-60 minutes.
Real Results take time so to keep myself encouraged along the way I’ve learned to count my wins and all the great things that are going to happen.
This past summer I learned a really good lesson about this: So I dedicated a specific period of time to address an issue. I really laid into it and put lots of time, effort, and energy into this. I just knew it would be solved by the time I finished.
Well that did not happen. In fact what did happen was the very opposite of what I wanted to happen.
I found myself amused and not angry (I got angry a few weeks later but that is a story for another time)
I was amused because while my results for that specific issue didn’t turn out like I wanted, way better things happened during that time period. There were so many wins and so much significant progress to be happy about.
If I had stayed focused on my myopic goal and what didn’t go the way I wanted, then I would have missed all that was going right.
So my advice to you if you get triggered to go off track is to:
- Count your wins Daily (My Best Self Journal has me count 3 wins a day)
- Think about what is going right and write it down
- Don’t get tired of doing the right thing and keep going because results are slow coming.
