Most “fitness” diets are comprised of low calorie foods that are high in protein and low in fat. Fitness diets emphasize caloric intake over everything. The entire goal of a fitness/weight loss diet is for the person to lose weight and see the scale go down.
Important Note: I said LOSE WEIGHT and not body fat. There’s a difference. With these types of diets you tend to lose muscle mass as well as body fat since the calorie intake is so low.
Fitness Diets
Diets usually include the following
- Egg Whites
- Protein Powders
- Broccoli
- Asparagus (Due to diuretic effect)
- Chicken Breasts
- White Fish
- Chicken Breasts
- Brown Rice
- Chicken Breasts
- Some Fruit (but not bananas because they are evil)
- Artificial Sweeteners
- 10 Almonds
- Chicken Breasts
There is no regard to digestion or how these foods may impact your hormonal systems. There’s also no regard to nutrient absorption or nutrient deficiencies. The entire goal is to get people to lose weight and see the scale go down. Of course it will go back up because none of this is sustainable but hey…you lost weight so you fulfilled the goal
I was on one of these diets for about 6 months and got very lean but I was not running at an optimal level. I also developed some very disordered eating habits if I ate any of the sinful foods that weren’t on the list and God forbid if I ate a Chicken Thigh instead of a Chicken Breast.
Being lean does not equal healthy.
SAY IT AGAIN FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
Being lean does not equal healthy. If you talk to anyone who has been lean for an extended period of time, then they can tell you that you don’t feel good. You’re tired all the time (no carbs and low calories), cold (hormones and thyroid are affected), and digestive problems. Some people also experience skin problems and their hair falling out due to nutrient deficiencies.
Of course these types of eating plans/excessive exercise programs are not sustainable. The problem is that they work in the short term leading people to believe they are successful at fat loss. Problems soon arrive later on down the line when their hormonal systems are all out of whack and weight loss crawls to a halt.
Health Diets
In this context diet just means your eating routine not some unsustainable eating program designed to get you to the Promised Land.
The Goal of a Health Diet is to:
- Promote Optimal Digestion to better absorb nutrients that your body needs to function at an optimal level
- Avoid Foods that cause Hormonal imbalances (SOY I AM TALKING TO YOU)
- Eat Enough Food to support your metabolism (The sum of all the reactions in your body)
- Eat Nutrient Dense Foods with the vitamins you need in order to promote tissue repair, vitality, and energy
- Lower Chronic Low Grade Inflammation in the body
- Get your body to burn excess fat instead of excess sugar
- Give up Dieting for Good and to become aware of emotional eating patterns
- Help you Live Better and Live Longer
Fitness/Weight Loss Diets DO Work
The problem is that Fitness/Weight Loss Diets work…for a short term but the long term damage to your thyroid and other hormonal systems is not worth it.
Over the past 2 years I know what has happened to me and I also have heard from so many others who have experienced the consequences of following these types of restrictive eating plans. More and more research is also coming out about the long term effects of dieting on metabolism and your hormonal systems.
Focusing on the scale, following restrictive diets, and becoming obsessed with food are sure signs that you are headed down a dangerous road that may lead to long term consequences.
