Sara Ahmed became the FIRST ARAB WOMAN to ever win a medal in weightlifting and also became the FIRST WOMAN EVER to win a medal for Egypt.

Sara Ahmed won the Bronze medal by lifting a combined weight of 562.17 pounds.

Even with this great accomplishment she is not sure what will happen when she goes back home.

“I don’t know what will happen when I get home off the plane,” she said, smiling nervously.

Egypt has not won a medal in weightlifting in nearly 70 years.

A true trailblazer

Ahmed got involved with the sport at age 11 after watching her brother compete in weightlifting.  She hopes that her success will inspire more girls to take up the sport of weightlifting.

“I hope it will encourage other girls to take up the sport. A new weightlifting generation can be born, a new beginning.”

Weightlifting and handball were the most popular sports for Egyptian girls, she said, before adding: “I hope I can help to re-establish Egypt as a successful weightlifting nation.” (Source: Khaleejtimes)

At just 18 years old Sara Ahmed may have just blazed a trail for an entire generation of young women!
